The AU Falcon Introduction:

(Back to the AU1 Intro INDEX.)

Vision: New side mirrors were added significantly reducing wind noise with an added bonus at the same time - they served to help keep the side windows clean via their aerodynamic shape (despite their 'brick' like appearance) - a positive fact noted by many motoring writers at the time.

Unfortunately the glass manufacture for AU was moved overseas to of all places - China - which saw glass quality fall dramatically with visible distortions in many sedan rear windows and rear quarter glasses when viewed at an angle.  While the discerning owner had the rear window replaced under warranty (there are many who didn't) the rear quarter windows were pretty much all flawed and so no such fix was available either then or now.  For some reason wagons managed to avoid these quality issues - a bonus for the often neglected wagon customer!

Cargo: The AU Falcon made several significant advancements as far as it's cargo compartments were concerned - with the first being the recessed boot lid hinges which no longer impinged on the sedan's boot space, effectively increasing the available area for safe storage without damage to the boot items.  Additionally the boot lip was lowered a further 18.6mm to provide for easier loading.

The station wagon carried on the EL's standard fitment of cargo barrier mounting points making installation in this model an extremely easy ordeal.  Importantly though, the AU introduced a number of finer points to the wagon's cargo area - with welded steel tie down points included in all four corners of the rear cargo area and the spare finally stored beneath the floor with a winch allowing easy stowage / retrieval without the need to remove the cargo area contents.
