AU Falcon Coupe :Hillier

This is the car we all wish Ford would have built! Although it looks like a skillfully done computer modified picture - having seen this car in the flesh I can assure you it's 100% real! And while Ford denies it has any plans to build a Falcon Coupe in the very near future, Ford fans are fortunate enough to have Tenterfield NSW based "Hillier Bros" conversions on their side. For a measly $30K you too can have your AU Falcon converted into a two door - a real bargain if you think of what it will cost to find your way into a new Monaro when they finally hit the streets!
And if you're still not convinced - consider the head turning value of this car verses a Porche or the like! I don't know about you - but I think I know what car would get the most looks... (and it wouldn't be the Porche!!!).

There is no doubt that the classic lines of the AU have made it easy on the Hillier Bros - with the swept 'C' pillars mimicking a coupe straight from the factory. But don't let me undersell what these guys are capable of - this hides a myriad of masterful changes to create the final shape of the coupe (as pictured here). |
Although not immediately obvious, the roof has been "chopped" (lowered) in such a way that the front and rear windscreens remain factory items - an important consideration given the fragility of these items! To accomplish this, the Hillier's have carefully leaned both sets of pillars towards the centre of the car - shortening the roof to suit and creating a much sleeker profile as a bonus. The obvious bits are the lengthening of the rear quarters and fabrication of new door skins to create those magnificent long coupe doors.

Not so obvious (until you're told) is the changing of the side window base line to slope upwards away from the body line - giving a classic coke-bottle style hip reminiscent of the great Falcon & Monaro Coupes of the late 60's & 70's. Included in the price is supplying longer door trims as well as shorter passenger side trims to boot. The side glass is unique - and as such carries a $1000 price penalty - as is to be expected with an extremely limited production run.
|
And if you're worried that you're new two door Falcon Coupe will become just one of many - don't. Last I heard Hillier's were hoping to produce one of these per month - so if you haven't got your tabs on one be prepared for a long wait! So what do the Hillier Bros do when they're not earning a crust building classic Falcon coupes? Try hearses and stretched limos! So you can understand these guys have more than a few clues when it comes to modifying Ford products... |

In fact, so good is their quality that you'd sware that it was Ford who built this coupe rather than a conversion specialist! However, anybody who attends their local Ford dealer to buy one of these will be slightly disappointed... In fact, if rumours I hear are correct - such is the quality of their workmanship that it does not effect the Ford factory warranty of 3 years / 100,000 kms.

And so while Ford cannot justify building a two door Falcon Coupe on the count of the existance of the Mustang, Ford fans need not miss out at all. So despite Holden's brave promises, it has been the Ford fans who have gotten their Coupe first and second (Hillier Falcon Coupe followed by the Australian release of the Mustang) with Holden coming in a distant third. - The way it should be. And to top it all off Ford now has a convertible two door as well (Mustang)! Go Hillier's - Go Ford!!! |
