Above: Standing in front of the G6E is pure pleasure, with the grill working better visually in 'real life' than any of us expected. Better still - it's practical with it's huge inlet area sure to cool that turbo even better than the model before... It will be interesting to finally hear the story behind that "beehive" under bonnet bracing combined with partial heat / noise barrier attached to the underside of the bonnet - without a doubt there's a very good reason for it, one I can see already is the weight saving afforded by not having to use a full bonnet insulator mat!
Above: Getting straight to the heart of the matter (I know this is the bit you really wanted to see) compared to the BF before it, the FG's engine bay is a mess...which is a pity considering the potential that lies within! I am sure given time, some enterprising young adventurer will clean one up for the show scene but! Who's gunna be the first? Notice that new cast-alloy single runner length log style manifold hiding away under all that clobber tho - just what the doctor ordered! I can see heaps of these being retrofitted to BA & BF turbo's in the very near future!
Above: Yeah, like I said - what a mess! Still, with 270kW on tap, I'm sure it's a mess that's easy to live with!
Above: Thought I had better add another shot of that sumptuous looking exterior - unlike the VE, there's no yawn factor here...
Above: Hot motor and great looking exterior not enough for you? Then how about kicking back in this great feeling cockpit instead? Black on black never looked so good. I was surprised - it really left the VE looking like a cheap copy, while the overall interior ambiance was very, very European - even German! If only they could match the quality as well.. My only beefs were that the door interior handles felt a little flimsy - like they could break into tears if you just looked at them a little side ways - and their action didn't feel much better either! The rear was surprisingly cramped for such a large car, but the side-bolsters didn't make you feel like your butt was being forced inwards anymore which is a real plus for back seat passengers in the G6E at least...
Above: I'm just trying to figure out what it looks more like - BMW 5 series (current model, unlike the VE which looks like last decade's Beemer instead), Lexus or even Subaru Liberty sedan??? And then the Falcon adds a little bit here and a little bit there adding up to a look all of it's own..
Above: Here are two badges that won't be forgotten for a while - even if G6E does sound a little meaningless at the moment! Looking this good, I am sure plenty of these will go missing to end their lives on shelves in kids rooms all over Australia!
Above: Pure class...what more can be said?
Above: I expected it to be hard to get a photo but this was ridiculous - although gave another opportunity to show off the profile of the Falcon's doors yet again. There were plenty of punters lined up to sit-in, open, close, try this, try that...all day long!
THE END...well, nearly. I was politely impressed with the entirety of the feel and look of the G6E - now all we have to do is drive one! Even the rear bumper treatment left nothing to be desired - with the sports treatment being given it from the ground up. My only beef was that the boot opening looked a little too small for my liking! Oh well, can't have everything perfect can we? So far it's a 9 out of 10 from me, and only misses out on a 10 for those few little niggles already evident. Will our opinion change once we've tasted as well as oogled? For that, I guess we'll have to wait and see... Discuss these cars and more by clicking HERE. (back to the TBF 2008 Melbourne Motor Show gallery index)
