Heritage

Steiglitz is situated between Geelong and Ballarat, is almost a ghost town today, but in the 1850s and 1890s it was a busy gold mining township with hotels, shops, churches.

Gold was first discovered at Steiglitz in the early 1850s and at the height of the gold rush the population of Steiglitz was over 1500. Another boom followed in the 1890s however by the 1940s the gold appeared to have run out and with it the township decreased in size gradually.  Today a handful of residents live in and around Steiglitz and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounds and the remaining historic buildings and mining sites.
