(NAVIGATION: Page 5, Page 4, Page 3, Page 2, Page 1, back to TBF Tech) PART 3: OIL FILTER SEAL REMOVAL Okay, we've gotten the oil drained (hopefully without making too much mess), the oil pan off & inspected, and now the filter's off. You should now be able to see this:
You can see the recess (bore) where the filter oil spout inserts into at the left near the blue wire... Make sure the seal has come out with the filter, or if not, remove it carefully (so as not to mark the sealing surface) preferably with something plastic or blunt so as not to gouge the soft alloy.
Above: this image shows the recess with seal still in place. If left here, the new filter will not push all the way home, preventing it from sealing properly and making everything hard to assemble. Above: This is the culprit & where it goes on the filter... STRAIGHTENING THE OIL PAN: Over time and successive tightenings, the area around each bolt progressively stretches to the point where it no longer allows the bolts to put any tension on the seal itself, which will end up causing unsightly leaks. Remember, fixing this at a later date will involve going through the whole job of dumping the oil and removing the pan once again, so much much better and much easier to take the time to do it at this stage! First of all tho, clean the pan as it will make it much easier to handle as well as giving less risk of ending up with oil splashing in your face / eyes as you hammer!
Working on the edge of the bench, and using a steel pin-punch of the appropriate size to fill the area bounded by the strengthening ribs each side, carefully work your way around until each bolt hole is flattened back to where it should be. Related Pages on www.trueblueford.com : TBF
